Myanmar Disaster Relief EffortIn May of 2008, Myanmar was devastated by a cyclone and was the deadliest natural disaster to hit Myanmar in recent history. A state of emergency was declared across much of the country following the 10-hour storm. They experienced extensive flooding from the 20 inches of rain, boats on their sides in harbors, roofs ripped off buildings, uprooted trees and downed power lines. According to the United Nations, over 140,000 people died and 2.5 million are homeless or are in need of help. Rice and drinkable water is scarce. Here is an excerpt of an email from him: "My heart and my passion is to introduce Jesus Christ to the desperate Buddhist and loved ones through our financial help and various ways of support (providing food, water, shelters, etc). God is in control, just and faithful. He has a plan for Myanmar behind all this. The whole Yangon has been mourning and crying out. Only God knows. Please continue to share the big needs with churches and friends there to help these desperate people and homeless with finances. We are the right people to channel your passionate giving to the right needs on your behalf". Impact Society held a rummage sale shortly after the cyclone hit and sent proceeds to our contact within Myanmar. Myanmar is still in need of help and Impact Society will continue to support the effort. The pictures in the right hand column are from that contact who is in Myanmar. Cherith International
Cherith International is caring for orphans and needy people in Nawalapitiya, a small to wn located in the central mountains of Sri Lanka. Nawalapitiya is home to a multi-ethnic and multi-religious community with a diverse culture. Many families in this mountainous area are living on the breadline and the illiteracy rate is high. Please read how Cherith International is helping the underprivileged in various ways. Short-term missions trips to Sri Lanka are held about once a year. This is a great opportunity to go oversees with men from Impact Society and care for orphans and the needy of Sri Lanka. Mission Guides serves as the US based facilitating organization for these trips. |
